Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe • Confectionery

Visiting Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in the centre of St Albans, is just like travelling back in time to a yesteryear when traditional sweet emporiums were shops packed with jars of colourful bon bons and more than 500 other varieties of sweets, all designed to delight customers of all ages!

Mr Simms traditional confectionary shop has now opened at no 5 French Row, next to the famous historical High Street Clock Tower and only a stones throw from St Alban’s Cathedral and is located in one of the town’s oldest 15th Century historical buildings.

The shelves are filled to over-flowing with every conceivable variety of fudge, sweets, lollipops, liquorice, candy sticks and chocolates you could possibly imagine available in one store.

Those of you who will always associate pick ‘n’ mix with a Woolies counter, are really in for a major treat at Mr Simms. The shop has a large glass counter area packed with all the old pick ‘n’ mix favourites like love hearts and cola bottles, while behind the counter, the entire wall area is set aside for over 250 display jars of more traditional sweets from Cherry crystals to Barley Twists.

Mr Simms also stocks a vast array of retro sweets like Refreshers, Frys Chocolate bars and Fizzwizz, which have been almost impossible to locate at the ‘corner shop ‘ in recent years.

At the more luxury end of the scale, you will also find displays of Mr Simm’s own brand of chocolate bars and fudges.
For those with diabetic issues, Mr Simms also stocks an extensive sugar-free range of chocolate bars, confectionary, liquorice, jelly sweets and mints, together with an extensive range of gluten- free sweets.
So if you fancy a never to be forgotten walk down memory lane, then take a trip down to Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in French Row and be guaranteed a really warm and memorable welcome!

I have always found the products in this shop to be of a high standard. It’s a shame that the old fashioned decor is not matched by some old fashioned service . When I went in this Friday the person serving was rude and unhelpful. I knew things weren’t going to go well when I went up to the counter and had to wait at least half a minute for the assistant to finish texting on her phone! I was unhappy with the ugly brown paper bags the products were placed in ( not the usual white ones) when I asked about nicer packing I was told quite rudely that I should have asked for those to start with. No suitable gift wrapping was available. Overall an unpleasant few minutes spent in what should be a lovely shop and I am now left with the task of finding some festive packing for the sweets I bought.
