The Falklands Islands and a touch of Antarctica – St Albans, Harpenden & District Philatelic Society

Our first display of the new season should be of a feast of Postal History. Renowned for his studies of the military campaigns in the Sudan, our speaker will now be looking at the Falkland Islands with particular reference to the Argentine invasion of 1982.

We can expect a detailed and fascinating insight into the military personalities involved in the conflict and an excellent display of letters and other mail sent by both the Argentinean and the British forces. A few shocks and surprises may also come to light. Material sent by the islanders themselves before, during and after the occupation will give an insight into the effect that the invasion had on the day to day operation of the Falklands Post Office and daily life on the islands.

The evening will conclude with a look at mail sent from some of the bases in Antarctica – including some unexpected sources.

As the local society serving all in the St Albans area, we cater for all interested in stamps and postal history.

Visitors are most welcome so why not come along for an interesting and enjoyable evening even if you don’t collect yourself.
