Following on from our January screening of the brilliant doc RBG, On The Basis of Sex delves into the history of the now notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
In 1956, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was very much outnumbered in a 500-strong male-dominated class at Harvard Law School; 37 years later, she became the second ever woman appointed to the Supreme Court. Mimi Leder’s biopic follows Ginsburg (portrayed by Felicity Jones) as she rises up the ranks of the legal profession and fights against discrimination on the basis of sex— starting with a ground-breaking tax case that she and her husband, Martin Ginsburg (Armie Hammer), knew could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination.
This masterful portrayal pays homage to a woman who found her voice challenging deeply established male colleagues and brought about seismic change to the US legal system. Doing justice to a legendary figure is no easy feat, but Leder definitely succeeds, impeccably casting Jones to tell the story of an unwavering will.
An inspiring and spirited true story which arrives just in time for Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court. Don’t miss.
