Maltings Arts Theatre

he Maltings Arts Theatre has long been a part of St Albans’ cultural make-up, enjoying a rich heritage over the years and providing a home for scores of live performance events that might otherwise have struggled to find a stage.

Originally under local authority control, a bumpy ride during the three years of economic downturn that followed 2008 saw audiences and revenue decline at such a rate that St Albans City & District Council began to consider alternative uses for the site, including plans to turn the theatre into a cinema.

Finding itself outgrowing its then-home in Pudding Lane and looking for a new base from which to perform innovative, imaginative and inspiring theatre, St Albans theatre company OVO saw an opportunity to preserve a much-loved live performance venue while
At the same time creating a new home for itself.

OVO took control of the 140-seat theatre, initially on a six-month trial, in September 2011 and for the last two years has been working with external production companies and associate partners to bring the good times back to The Maltings.

Sporting a new, fresh, contemporary look, and run by one member of staff and a host of passionate volunteers, the theatre now hosts a range of dramatic, musical and youth performance.

In 2012 the Maltings staged 50 different events, spanning a range of traditional and classic drama, comedy, blues and folk nights, youth theatre projects, dance, opera, chamber music, workshops and poetry.
